>Calm Down, Pickle Haters

>I got a few emails from kind folks, concerned that Boo Boo was going to choke on a pickle or be somehow harmed from sodium intake so soon in his food career…(see post below).

Rest assured, Boo-man has had a very healthy intro to solid foods. I make all of his food myself with organic fruits and veggies. He has had spinach, avocado, green beans, banana, peach, sweet potato, carrots, and brown rice cereal. I do not add any salt or sugar, just steam lightly and pop in the cuisinart. Once in a great while (like, twice in a month) I will give him a pickle to gnaw on…he loves it, and I think the rubbery cold feels good on his sore gums. As soon as his bitty teeth start getting chunks off of the pickle, I promptly take it away…causing him to wail in horror. Surely I am not the only Momma who has given a little tyke a pickle….they are so YUMMY….

Its all good in the pickle hood. But thanks for being concerned, e-friends!

    >I love pickles! I could go for a nice cold kosher dill…yum!I can’t imagine that it would be bad for him…especially if he’s just gnawing on it.ICLW

    >I don’t have any experience, but it seems like an inventive way to help soothe the pain of teething. Sounds like you have it pretty well in hand.ICLW

    >*new reader* I just read the whole first page..WOW! I want to congratulate you on your little *chubby* guy because, that’s awesome. He is adorable! Also, way to go on breast feeding. I had a lot of problems breast feeding my daughter and was only able to do it for 3 months. I used a nipple shield and what worked for my daughter did not work for my son, but I learned and never gave up until my child wanted to give up. From everything I learned, I was able to nurse my son for almost a whole year! That’s huge *for me*. You have my respect and a “mom hi-5”. The pickle thing…awesome! We did pickles and frozen bananas. It worked for us, your doing a GREAT job and your Boo Boo is a lucky baby to have such a great mom!-D *ICLW*

    >I use to do the same thing with my kids and pickles. Also, ginger snaps work wonders for teething. If they manage to bite off a chuck, they just get soggy enough for the kiddo to eat. And, all the spicy flavor of ginger snaps seemed to help numb my kids’ gums.

    >There’s actually a thought that introducing babies to strong tastes early (ie mixing mint in with peas, etc) is good for baby to avoid later aversions to strong tastes. Part of the reason our kids like the blue box mac ‘n cheese and chick’n nuggets is because they have no taste (well not much of one). With careful monitoring I don’t see anything wrong with young man’s pickle.
